Personality
Perhaps Drake's most prominent trait is his humor and rather callous reaction to death. After killing enemies or civilians that are a threat to his mission, he'll oftentimes crack a joke, which might make him seem heartless, but is a result of how little he cares about the life of an enemy and how he deals with everything he has gone through in his career. This, coupled with his disregard for civilians that act like idiots in a war zone makes it seem as though he doesn't care about other people. Despite this, Drake is a good person. He prefers to remain a soldier as he loves his job and tries to avoid killing non-combatants unless it is absolutely necessary. He will do almost anything to save one of his brothers in arms, short of jeopardizing the mission, and will not leave a man behind unless there is absolutely nothing he can do to get them.
Drake's personality is very much divided into two different aspects, which present themselves more prominently with whatever he is doing at the time. When on a clandestine mission, he has small regard for anyone outside of his team and is willing to kill them or destroy their livelihoods to get what he needs from them.
When off duty, working with conventional forces, or on a mission that isn't clandestine, a more compassionate side comes out. He makes a greater effort to help those around himself, and he is more hesitant to utterly destroy someone's life. Drake is extremely loyal, going to great lengths to help those around him. Even so he is very pragmatic and doesn't believe in a fair fight.
History
Drake was born in Georgia, North America, his family moved around a lot however and so he never stayed in one place too long. His parents were both landscapers, but were stealing from the people they did work for and on one occasion, when Drake was ten, they ended up killing a teenage girl who caught them, forcing them to go on the run. As this was extremely stressful they began to take it out on Drake and his younger brother Dax, leading to Drake's left arm and several of Dax's ribs being broken. One day, Dax had collapsed in a neighbor's yard leading to them calling EMS who in turn got the police involved which resulted in both of Drake's parents beings arrested. While his arm was taken care of, he found out that his brother had died from his injuries causing him to hate his parents even more than he already did. Drake was placed in an orphanage before being adopted by a police officer, she taught him to control his anger and using it to motivate him into doing something meaningful with his life in order to avoid being like his parents. This led him to enlist in the Federation Army when he was 17 as an infantryman, something that he loved as he got paid to travel all over the world and kill the scum of humanity. Due to the relatively peaceful state of the world he really only took part in small scale COIN operations and soon even those were mostly a thing of the past, he had been shot a few times and wounded by fragmentation from explosives, but he had been lucky enough to not be crippled by any of them.
After seven years in the infantry Drake was now a squad leader and was considering leaving the Army, not because he had grown to hate it, but because he was sick of being placed on pre-deployment status just to not deploy as the situation was taken care of before his unit even left. On a whim, he decided to try out for the special forces, and while the assessments and training were some of the hardest things he had ever done, he was able to make it through them due to the skills and knowledge he had learned and honed during his deployments. Once he was placed in an active unit he began to understand just why his infantry unit never got to deploy, the special forces were so good at their jobs they could topple rebel governments and cripple hostile military forces with just a few precision strikes to critical areas, with direct attacks and support from air and ground forces. All this would change during the OYW, as the huge technological advantage they had over most of their enemies was rendered useless by Minovsky Particles making their jobs significantly harder, Zeon MS made this even worse as a single team would be unable to effectively engage a single mobile suit team. As a result, they were mostly relegated to small raids, spotting for artillery, and performing recon missions on Zeon forces. During the OYW the Special Operations forces suffered severe casualties up until they began using MS of their own, Drake and his unit were pulled back to their base in order to begin familiarization and training with the Federation MS, but as the war ended before they could finish they never got to use their new skills. After the OYW they kept up training in MS, but never deployed with them, Drake missed Operation Stardust as well since he was on Earth during it.
The nuke and colony drop resulted in the creation of the Titans and renewed the use and development of Federation MS and as a result a large number of special forces soldiers, including Drake, were seconded to the Titans to train and advise them while also getting valuable experience piloting their MS, while in a Titan unit they received all the benefits a Titan pilot did and, on paper at least they were basically considered to be actual Titans, but are not required to wear a Titan uniform. This allows them to pass themselves off as regular Federation forces while not being forced into a subservient position when dealing with actual Titans unlike the regular forces. Drake, like most of the SOF, does know about the questionable actions Titans have taken, but so have they and it is still better than another Zeon like group causing the deaths of billions and as a result Drake considers the AEUG to be traitors and Zeon sympathizers.
