Personality
Yanyu desires order and simplicity, this is fairly obvious. Machines fascinate her; they are largely predictable, more so than people or wars, easier to understand, and far easier to change for the better. And while she knows what her creations can do and have done, it is the only thing she knows and the only way she feels value in herself. At this point, she doesn't know what else she could possibly do with her life. She is often curt if she doesn't find it necessary to explain something accurately. Additionally, she is punctual and likes to keep a regular schedule. This isn't to say isn't at times disorganized, or even air headed, but she's prone to correcting it before it becomes a problem.
There's the unavoidable truth that she's used to spending most of her day alone in a lab, library, or workshop. She is well aware of this. It isn't uncommon for her to be awkward or uncomfortable in social situations. This doesn't mean she retreats automatically, but is rather prone to fumbling, perhaps even in a comical way. And because of this, her job, and some worrying over her age, she's pretty much given up any hope of being in a romantic relationship. But at the same time, she doesn't wholly desire to be that way, so despite these things, she wants to and will try to interact with people and be outgoing.
Pride is an interesting subject when discussing Yanyu. She can be rather boastful, in fact, just eternally not of herself personally. Rather, her pride is in her country, it's history, it's and advancements, her teams, and especially her creations. In fact, she refers to mobile suits she designed as her children. This could be interpreted as vain, though. She dislikes to give out her name easily. She may simply refer to herself as "a simple engineer" when asked, or simply the formal Dr. or Ms. Sokolov. Her first name is something she feels reserved for only those close to her.
History
Yanyu was born on to Pavel and Jiao Sokolov, captain and pilot of the Vaughn, a Munzo trading ship that primarily did business between Munzo and Earth. It was Yanyu's visitation on the Vaughn with her parents that sparked her interest in technology from a young age. Such "take your daughter to work day"s were common as the Sokolovs were an incredibly busy couple in their profession. As a result, she was often also under the care of her uncle and aunt.
Yanyu's childhood was part of an interesting part of the history of Munzo, as it was the time when the seeds of secession were being sewn. Though she was but a child unable to understand the situation, Yanyu found the rallies and charisma of Zeon Zum Diekun to be exciting, and she assured by her family that he was a great man. Even as an adult, she holds profound respect of Zeon Zum Diekun, his writings, teachings, and speeches, and the name Zeon.
With a loving family, something to believe in, a passion, and being born into the wealth of a colony, Yanyu had ingredients she needed to succeed. She was, in fact, a top student. A noteworthy diversion she had from her academic career was an affair with the recently divorced science teacher Jessie Wasserman. This started as Yanyu's admiration for her mentor and uncertainty of her young emotions, that actually lead to her making the first moves. Though, despite her determination in the beginning, it turned into an on again off again relationship, which petered out when Yanyu began university. Even Jessie Wassermann became a distraction towards what she believed to be a bright future.
In 0068, Pavel Sokolov was killed in a Diekunist rally by the secret police under the commands of Gihren Zabi. Although she spent the next couple years in depression over her father's death, she continued her studies and was eventually recruited by the Zeon government for a top secret project. She had no choice in the matter, but if she was given the choice as the project went on, she would have still stayed in it. Even though it was to be used a weapon on war, it fascinated her, and changed her life. It became her life, something she poured her heart and soul into. It gave her a sense of purpose, and a new community, and respect among her peers for her contributions. Dr. Yanyu Sokolov was assigned to work with Zeonic company was part of the team that developed the first mobile suit, MS-01, and in future research in mobile suit technology.
At a moment when tight on staff, Yanyu volunteered to do some of the test piloting for the Zaku I, and while she was a bad pilot at the time, she was naturally able to collect the data needed and contributed to its manual. She went on to contribute to the creation of other mobile suits, mainly the Zaku II, Acguy, and Gelgoog; she pulled double duty as both developer and test pilot; Honing her skills as a pilot between the four mobile suits. And from the beginning, she's considered actually piloting the result of her work to be the best part of the job. While she heard of the gassing of colonies by her Zaku 1, it was the kind of thing she was already used to be then. If it wasn't her, there were others just waiting to work for Zimmad and Zeonic to make machines used for such a thing. In the end, she took comfort in seeing her work being valued by her country.
It wasn't all fun and games, however. News of the Project V hit her hard. Not only were Zimmad at Zeonic's throats already, but the Federation was able to reverse engineer their mobile suit technology, and make a fool out of them. Yanyu at first hit a slump during the production of the Acguy because of this. By the time the Gelogoog was in the works, she had regained her confidence. She wasn't quite aware of the severity of Zeon's situation and truly believed that the Gelgoog and Zeonic's other project the Kampher would both one up the White Devil and win the war. She was only right about the first part, and thus partially blames Zeon's loss of the one year war on herself because the Gelgoog wasn't finished and put into production earlier.
Unlike some others,Yanyu was cooperative with Zeonic being seized by Anahiem. She figured that she lost: the Gelogoog was too late. Anahiem was brilliant and a worthy opponent. Also, she knew she was going to be safe: she was valuable as a scientist and a test pilot. She was right, and the fact then she didn't escape to Axis or fight back in one of the Gelgoogs in the facility helped this. She was still an idealist, as she always had been, and was still not a fan of the federation. However, she hoped for a more peacefully coexistence between Earth and Spacenoids. Side 6, Riah, had proven it possible, after all.
Initially at least, it was a rather easy transition from Zeonic to Anaheim, and she did her job well, helping the likes of Franklin Bidan and others adapt Zeon technology to the Federations own. At the end of the day, it wasn't much different except the lack of the agency and stress of the war. And coworkers from Zeon, like Hilda Steiner, helped her feel more at home. These were some of Yanyu's happier years and the money from working at Anahiem was a big help in taking care of her aging mother, Jaio.
It was after Operation Stardust that things started to take a turn for the worse. Like at Zeonic, she still had occasional test pilot duties, and thus interacted with normal Federation soldiers more so than most of the civilians working at Anahiem. She found herself harassed and on two occasions even assaulted. One occasion giving her a broken arm and another being luckily intervened by a more responsible officer. Her testing duties ceased, but she had already had her doubts about the Federation and the Titans before the 30 Bunch incident.
Yanyu's hunches sadly proved right, but fortunately Steiner proved a greater friend that she could have ever hoped for. With Steiner's connect, Yanyu made quick escape into the AEUG, where it was clear she'd be welcomed and needed, and her having Steiner's back in return has helped Steiner be AEUG without many questions asked. Unfortunately, in her quick departure, Yanyu has left her mother Jaio on Luna II, albeit with a large savings. And thus, with regrets already in her mind, Yanyu once escaped one home to another like a stray cat.
