Personality
As a child, Katharyn (Katie, to her friends) was a sweet, precocious child, cheerful and kind-hearted. But the horrifying experiences she was forced to endure through the One-Year War and the Delaz Fleet Incident have left her jaded, cynical, and callous. Katharyn's general demeanor has been described as cold, and she keeps to herself as a rule. She is neither expressive nor all that friendly, but gets along at least reasonably well with most of her peers.
Katharyn bitterly mistrusts Spacenoids as a general rule and is driven by a near-fanatical hatred of Zeon in particular, whom she blames for the One-Year War as well as the atrocities perpetrated during Operation Stardust. Her first commanding officer was himself a veteran of the One-Week Battle, and from him she has adopted the phrase "The only good Zeke is a dead Zeke".
In combat, Katharyn is utterly merciless. She is an aggressive, even rash fighter, but never careless.
History
Katharyn Holcroft (Katie to her friends) was born in New York in the summer of U.C. 0062. Her father was a low-level employee of the city government, relatively unimportant but popular. Her mother was a piano tutor. They lived in a small apartment, but overall they were happy enough. Katharyn's life was fairly simple, the ordinary life of a young girl in one of the Federation's largest cities. She played soccer with friends at school, learned the piano from her mother, and gave no thought whatsoever to what went on outside of her own small world, never mind outside her city or in space. But in January of U.C. 0079, everything changed.
Following their declaration of war and the subsequent devastation wrought by the One-Week Battle and the disastrous Operation British, the Principality of Zeon began their invasion of Earth. Zeon forces landed among other places on both the East and West coasts of North America, including Katharyn's native New York. The city was devastated in the attack, and Katharyn and her parents were forced to abandon their home and flee into hiding. They found shelter with a group of other refugees in the ruins of the city and eked out a miserable existence hiding out from the invading Zeon forces.
However, the Principality of Zeon continued to tighten their grip on the entire continent, and held New York itself under total control. Eventually, the enemy found them and Katharyn's father was only just able to arrange for his wife and child, along with a handful of others, to escape before he and most of the people who had been hiding out with them were captured an executed, leaving Katharyn and her mother on the run.
Alone with a young child, on foot and with limited supplies, Cynthia and Katharyn were forced to keep moving to evade Zeon forces, never staying in one place for long. It was a grim, difficult existence for such a young girl.
When they left the shelter Cynthia had taken her husband's old side-arm, a semi-automatic pistol of Austrian manufacture, which he'd owned for years. Chambered for .357 SIG, the weapon had the advantage of high muzzle velocity and accuracy, as well as excellent stopping power and a fairly large ammunition capacity (15+1). The weapon was rarely fired, due to the difficulty of acquiring ammunition. But it was protection nonetheless.
The murder of her father and many of their friends, and the subsequent difficulties she and her mother endured, traumatized Katharyn. She grieved for her father's death, and she hated the Zeon for having taken her father, her home, her entire life away from her. And as the months went by that hatred continued to grow as she and her mother continued to suffer from the occupation.
At last, the Federation rolled out the RGM-79 GM mobile suit, and the situation began to turn around, until at last the war ended in defeat for the Principality of Zeon in December 0079. After the war ended, Katharyn and her mother settled in a rural community deep in the interior of North America.
In early U.C. 0081, the nineteen-year-old Katharyn joined the Earth Federation Space Forces, intending to become a mobile suit pilot. At this time, Cynthia gave to Katharyn her father's old pistol, which she had kept. After obtaining the necessary permits to carry the weapon, Katharyn took the pistol with her, safely stored in a locked gun case. Driven by her hatred of Zeon and her mistrust of Spacenoids in general, Katharyn excelled in every course in armed and unarmed combat she took, especially in the use of various firearms. In mobile suit combat training and simulation, she proved to be a skilled if rash pilot, specializing in high-mobility combat at close- to medium-range.
Her experiences during the war had changed Katharyn, leaving her cynical and callous. She generally kept to herself, though she got along reasonably well with her comrades.
She was posted in early 0083 to the Salamis-class destroyer Monterey, piloting an RGM-79C GM Kai. Its commanding officer, a veteran of the One-Week Battle who held a deep and abiding hatred of Zeon, was fond of saying that in his view "the only good Zeke is a dead Zeke". This grizzled veteran recognized in Katharyn something akin to himself, and took her under his wing. Eventually, Katharyn would adopt the same phrase herself.
On November 10th, U.C. 0083, the Monterey was among the ships sent to Konpei Island - formerly the Zeon space fortress Solomon - for the Federation's Naval Review. Zeon's Delaz Fleet, which had previously stolen the Federation's prototype Gundam Unit 2, attacked the Naval Review, using the Gundam's atomic bazooka to launch a tactical nuclear warhead that decimated the fleet. The Monterey was one the few ships that survived the attack and subsequently took up the pursuit of the Delaz Fleet as they hijacked a colony, which they intended to drop onto Earth. The pursuit failed, leaving a horrified Katharyn to watch helplessly as the hijacked colony fell onto the North American continent, crippling the Federation's agricultural abilities and causing numerous casualties among rural communities throughout the continent. Tragically, Katharyn's mother was among the victims. The incident caused her hatred of Zeon to grow still further.
The Monterey, along with most of the ships of ITS CLASS, were quietly retired and scrapped following the Delaz Incident, and Katharyn was reassigned to a different vessel. Around the same time, in December of 0083, the Federation formed a new special operations task group created with the express purpose of hunting down and destroying Zeon remnants and sympathizers: the Titans.
In January of U.C. 0084 Katharyn, now 22 years old, joined the Titans. Instead of her GM Kai, she now piloted a more powerful RGM-79N GM Custom, which was painted in the distinctive dark-blue and black colors of that elite unit. When she joined the Titans, Katharyn requested and obtained special permission from her Commanding Officer to carry her father's old pistol instead of the standard-issue M71A1. From then on, she carried the weapon with her almost at all times. Because it is a non-standard caliber, Katharyn maintains the pistol herself and purchases her own ammunition. When she does not have the weapon with her - which is extremely rare - it is stored in a locked gun case, which is safely stored in the ship's armory.
In mid-0084 Katharyn reassigned as a replacement pilot to DEVRON(DEVelopment squadRON) 17, the Hurricanes, after the death of McKay, one of their pilots. She rotated into the unit along with Kai Nanaki, who took over the unit from its previous CO, Rick Nero. The Hurricanes had been in pursuit of a Zeon Remnant force believed to have a nuclear capability. Though for her part, she did not get along with the CO, Katharyn did find that she got along quite well with squadron XO Jim Anderson, a quiet, gifted pilot and a brilliant tactician. Anderson was a consummate team player, emphasizing cooperative attack tactics and covering of one's wingman at all times. The Hurricanes finally cornered the Remnant on December 25 of that year and defeated them in battle. Katharyn herself scored three kills during that battle, over the course of which Anderson saved her from an enemy attacking from her six, while Nanaki was killed in the same engagement.
At the end of July 0085, a Titans unit under the command of Bask Ohm used G3 poison gas to eliminate the entire population of Side 1's Colony 30 after anti-Federation protests turned violent and the Titans were called in to quell a potential uprising. The truth about this incident was suppressed. At the time, DEVRON 17 was in workup at the Gate of Zedan asteroid base following a major overhaul, and were going through preparations for another series of patrols. Thus, only vague rumors reached Katharyn's ears of the colony's population having died due to an outbreak of disease.
In early 0087, the 24-year-old Katharyn was transferred out of DEVRON 17 into the newly-formed Fifteenth Tactical Mobile Squadron, under the command of Lieutenant Commander James Ennis. Leaving her GM Custom behind, she boarded a military shuttle and shipped out from the Gate of Zedan, heading towards Luna II.
Arriving at Luna II, she and the other pilots of the 15th TMS were dispatched to engage against AEUG forces that were fleeing from a successful raid on Gryps II, having stolen prototype mobile suits being tested at the colony. While en route, their poorly-armed supply convoy was attacked by enemy forces, in the first of many battles Katharyn would fight against the rebel AEUG in the new war that now began...
