Personality
Due to his experiences in the OYW, Fred has a deep hatred of the Zeon, in large part thanks to his time in Australia. He does tend to be fairly positive, and has a well developed sense of humor, and tries to keep the mood light with jokes and pranks. Once the shooting starts, he does tend to act more professional, but this doesn't stop him from making jokes during combat, rather just causing him to make far fewer jokes.
Even with his hatred of the Zeon, Fred went against the Titans due to their methods, though he agrees with their mission as an organization, but knows that their methods will just create more Zeon supporters, if not other groups entirely. He dislikes talking about the war,and is only willing to do so with other vets. Fred does however enjoy talking about his time in Australia, and more so his time as a pilot.
History
Fred is from North America, specifically North Carolina, and had a fairly typical childhood prior to the war. He was still in boot camp at the time, and as a result he missed his father's death at the Battle of Loum, which prevented him from seeing his father while they were both in the military, and meant that his father never knew that he had finished boot and had gotten into the military.
Obviously this got his hatred of the Zeon started, and after his deployment in Australia, he fought against them as best he could, although like all tank units, the M61 MBT he had been assigned was horribly outdated compared to the Mobile Suit units that Zeon sent to the Earth. Even so, they ended up with their tank platoon credited three Zaku kills and even an enemy Gouf, during their time in the tank corps. He felt that they'd done fairly well all things considered, but they were obviously losing the war due to the enemy Mobile Suits.
Until the Federation got their own MS out, Fred's platoon never managed to shoot down another enemy Mobile Suit, and like the rest of the Federal Forces, were stuck on the defensive. He never lost his tank though, and every member of his tank crew survived, though the unit as a whole was losing both men and tanks in what seemed like every battle. As the war continued, Zeon began to lose their momentum and the war bogged down into a stalemate, during this time Fred was pulled to begin training as a Mobile Suit pilot in late August.
His training lasted until mid November, at which point he was assigned to the Red Possum team as an RGM-79 GM pilot during the Federation's counter-offensive in Australia. They were supposed to take the city of Alice Springs, but the White Dingo team had beat them to it since they'd had the chance to do so. After this, when Red Possum was split into two groups, Fred was sent North to aid the Green Enchidna team in their attack on Darwin. Fred managed to shoot down two enemy Mobile Suits with his GM during the battle. It was obvious to him that the GM was superior to his old tank, and even the Zeon Zakus.
As Red Possum continued their operations, Fred worked his way up to five kills on his own, plus two shared. As the main force of the counter-offensive, Red Possum saw fairly heavy action, but still found themselves overshadowed by the White Dingos. Still, they were able to accomplish their objectives, and managed to capture more territory while the White Dingos were used to harass the enemy forces. But even then, the White Dingos seemed to be sent just where they needed to be to find key enemy intelligence.
In the end though, because the other teams were busy with taking territory, Red Possum and Black Swan were unable to make it in time to assist the White Dingos around the time the war ended. The White Dingos were mostly successful with their objective, and none of them had been shot down, so it ended up fairly well regardless. Fred had been glad to miss out on the space battles, as he had spent the entire war in Australia.
After the war, Fred was transferred out of Australia and in 0083 he was sent into space for the first time, being stationed at Luna II as an RGM-79C GM Type C pilot. Which caused him to be involved in Operation Stardust, only serving to make his hatred of Zeon to grow, since he'd seen the devastation of a colony drop before. While short, Operation Stardust had resulted in 2/3 of the space fleet being crippled, and they had failed to prevent the colony drop, even though they'd been victorious in the fighting. He'd been sent out after the Naval review had failed, as part of the forces sent to engage the Zeon forces.
He witnessed the Solar Ray firing on their own ships in a failed attempt to destroy the colony, and while this did nothing to endear him to Commander Bask Om, due to seeing what a colony drop did he could understand why they couldn't afford to wait either. Even so, the fact that Bask was in the Titans had been one reason Fred found himself avoiding them.
Fred had managed to shoot down a few enemy units, even with his inexperience with space combat, as it had been his first battle in space. But even with their victory, the Federation had failed to prevent the nuke from being used against them, and failed to prevent the colony drop, and while the damage hadn't been as bad as during the OYW, it had been even harder to recover from.
The disaster had also led to the creation of the Titans, who Fred agreed with in that they were there to deal with renegade Zeon like the Delaz fleet. As the years continued though, the A.E.U.G. was formed and did what they could to expose the atrocities committed by the Titans, at first Fred had ignored it, which wasn't hard due to the cover ups, but after what happened at Colony 30, several of his fellow soldiers had gone to the A.E.U.G. and there were more leaks on what the Titans were up to, at the time he only knew that something had happened there, though he didn't know what.
After what happened at colony 30, he like many others had been approached by people within the A.E.U.G., some were pilots he had worked with since the OYW, and in the end their arguments had persuaded him to join the A.E.U.G., specifically after his team leader from Red Possum had informed him about what had happened at colony 30.
The Titans were becoming more like Zeon, and had even resorted to a Zeon tactic from the war. After joining the A.E.U.G, Fred had been assigned to the 6th Replenishment Squadron for training, it was mostly to get used to the new GM Rechts, and his new team, though neither had been particularly difficult for him, since he's had years of experience with the C Type GM, and he worked fairly well with most people.
What he hasn't gotten used to is that he was technically deemed a traitor and deserter, though he still sees himself as a Federal Forces officer. But it helps him to look at it from the perspective that he's fighting to do what's best for the Federation.
