History
Chuck was born on Side Six to Max and Jane Finley. His dad was a pilot, working for the colony government as a civilian sector medivac pilot, with his mother kept things in order in the home. Chuck had always been fascinated by how his father handled the VTOL, and pestered his father from an early age for lessons on flying. Chuck learned to fly very young, and had that same passion his father had for it. He was a simple kid - loved baseball, studied hard enough to pass but not hard enough to excel, and when he graduated high school, he didn’t have the grades for a scholarship or the money to afford college. He shrugged it off and joined the Dockworker’s Union, helping to load and unload transports as they hauled in and out of the colony while he worked towards his commercial pilot’s license.
Chuck made his commercial license in UC 0078, and quickly started flying a charter shuttle for Delta Starliners. He stayed out of the One Year War - Side Six was neutral, and he had no particular love for the Federation or burning passion for Zeon. He rode out as a commercial pilot for several years, until UC 0086.
His father, unlike him, was somewhat politically inclined, having been promoted off pilot duty and into the Colony Government. He’d joined the budding political movement known as the Anti-Earth Union Group as an activist and fundraiser - his connections to the Dockworker’s Union made him an ideal source of recruiting and donations. Both Max and Jane were on a transport hauling basic goods- foodstuffs, machine tools, and the like - to an AEUG base in early UC 0087 when the Titans happened onto them. They didn’t demand a surrender, they didn’t even contact the transport. They just opened fire and destroyed it with all hands. While they tried to cover it up, they didn’t realize that an AEUG patrol saw them and recorded it. The news was relayed to Chuck, who didn’t take it well.
Falling into a deep depression, Chuck descending into alcohol abuse and was quickly fired from Delta. He took up his old job at the Dockworker’s Union, where he learned to drive petite MS on the construction gangs. As a qualified pilot, he spent more time than most in the things, and quickly developed a knack for them. An AEUG agent approached him several months after his parent’s death, offering him a job with the AEUG, given how angry the young man was. Chuck accepted, and his previous flight experience flagged him for their pilot training program. While his instructors hated his lack of discipline and general don’t-give-a-damn attitude, he could certainly fly, and they gave him a reluctant pass after he vaped all three of his evaluators. His normal flying wasn’t anything spectacular, but he showed flashes of genuine brilliance about a quarter of the time, and his instructors wouldn’t let that go to waste.
Assigned to train under Eddy LeNoir for his team integration, it was hoped that the War veteran could turn the mess that Chuck was into a useful pilot for the AEUG and get those flashes of brilliance to simply become brilliance. Chuck flies to simply destroy the Titans out of a burning desire for revenge; he keeps to himself on the carrier.
