Personality
In the 24 years of his life, the one thing Benjamin has been consistently called was down to earth. Laidback, relaxed, always taking things at his own pace. There was little that could permanently get the man down and those who met him knew it. From the loss of his home in the Principality’s opening war declaration to the battles he took part in and lost team members, Ben always tried to see the bright side of things and it was something of a relief to teammates who had grown weary of the hardships they had gone through. Even among the growing sentiment of earthnoid superiority within the Federation, those who knew Ben personally didn’t consider him a spacenoid but simply a comrade in arms, something that has extended to his new teammates within the AEUG as well.
History
Born in Colony 23 of Side 2, Benjamin’s past is somewhat of a touchy subject in recent years. Born to a working class family, Benjamin’s life was largely uneventful despite the growing calls for spacenoid independence from the Earth Federation. Sure, he heard all the reasons. No representation, it was overcrowded, living conditions were terrible, Earth was a glorious place filled with the rich big wigs of the Federation. Things that anyone would be concerned about on some level but when making a living was a priority, those things ended up on the backburner. Ben had to help his family with the bills and a distant Side’s increasingly violent calls weren’t going to change that anytime soon.
Unfortunately, fate had other plans in mind. On January 3rd of 0079, the Principality of Zeon declared a war of independence on the Earth Federation, striking at multiple colonies from the various Sides including his home colony in Side 2. Though he and his immediate family were one of the lucky ones to be evacuated in time, Ben still saw firsthand what lengths Zeon would go to for victory when they pumped his home full of poison gas, killing millions. Following this, Ben and his family were relocated to Side 6 as refugees for a time, the war stalling briefly before ramping up with Zeon’s Earth operations.
It was around September that Ben had become fed up with simply sitting around waiting for the war to end and volunteered to join the fight. Despite his parent’s wishes, Ben had signed up with the hopes of being a mobile suit pilot and by November, he had accomplished just that. Fresh out of training at Luna II, Ben was transferred down to North America as a GM Cannon pilot to join a growing Mobile Corps tasked with reclaiming the continent.
Serving in a multitude of battles that would take back Federation territory, Ben had proved himself a valuable member of his team as the Federation recaptured California and would continue to do so when they were sent into space, eventually taking part in the do or die Battle of A Bao Qu. Somehow managing to survive everything the war had thrown at him, Ben was grateful for the fighting to finally be over as he was less than willing to go all the way to Side 3.
Following the war, Ben’s military career had stagnated somewhat without an actual war going on. Separated from his old team and assigned to the Augusta Base as part of its guard detail, Ben simply did his duty to help provide for his folks back at Side 6 in peace. What would he have to worry about with the Principality gone? Granted, there was the occasional remnant poking its head out to make trouble but nothing worthy of note happened. Not until the Delaz Fleet reappeared, declaring war on the Federation once more. Despite not being involved in the incident personally, Ben had heard about the disaster at the Naval Review as well as the colony drop, the damage to the Federation fleet extensive and definitely didn’t miss the grand reveal of the Titans, an elite task force created to hunt down Zeon remnants and quell future uprisings. Most spacenoids had a negative disposition on the group, his parents included, but Ben knew to keep an open mind. They may have been a bit aggressive but given their mission, they had to be. When some remnant threatened to nuke the colonies in exchange for free passage, that very aggression kept the colonists safe. For Ben, it was what made him apply for the Titans. And then he got rejected.
Initially, Ben figured he had missed something in his application or he had made a bad impression somewhere. No big deal, he’d just try again and join up without a problem. He’d get great pay, the uniform would look sharp on him, and just name dropping that he was a Titan would earn him respect. But with each rejection, he had quickly become disillusioned with the organization. Between their tactics becoming increasingly aggressive and thug-like towards the colonists, even Ben had to admit there was just something wrong with the Titans. This all came to a head in 0085 during the riots at Side 1’s 30 Bunch.
Assigned to the Federation garrison as crowd control in case things got out of hand, Ben and several others found themselves suddenly relieved of their assignments as the protests spiraled into full riots and, not long after, Ben found himself transferred away from the colony entirely, without any justification. Even information requests regarding the colony or its garrison were rejected without cause, almost as fast as he could send them out. Ben then completely abandoned any wishes of being a Titan when he learned exactly why the assignments were seemingly shuffled out at random: The gassing of 30 Bunch. For Ben, this was the last straw.
Despite feeling the Titans were needed on some level to deal with Zeon remnants and uprisings, the fact that the Titans would commit outright murder was something he couldn’t deal with. It made the Titans no better than the old Principality that gassed his old home. Upon learning about the AEUG and their goal of removing the Titans, Ben joined up as fast as he could to put an end to things before they got worse.
